Althing 2025 Preparations

Can you believe it’s that time already? We’ve only just got back from Camp 100 but in under a week, the national DF movement will band together once more for the EveryThing !

The first two days of this event are our annual Althing, which means we’ve got some elections to run!

I’m going to use this post to explain how our electoral process will work this year, if you instead want a breakdown of which roles are up for election this year, please see this post.

Elections + Business Timeline

So Far: Althing has been announced to be held at Biblins Youth Campsite on the 16th and 17th August as part of the EveryThing

Saturday 9th August: Three google forms will be launched on the DF linktree. They are:

Nominations Form (find out more)

This form is the one you fill out to stand for a role on DF Committee. You just need to enter a few details about yourself, select to role you want to stand for and submit your speech to be put in the nominations booklet!

Motions Form (find out more)

This form is for submitting motions and musings for discussion at Althing.
This weekend is the only chance we have all year to alter the DF Constitution, so if there’s some changes you want to see in the movement, this is your chance to make that change
(For a guide to motions and all the other Althing business stuff, please see this wonderful DF Document produced by our Secretary, Wilf)

Absentee Ballot Form (find out more)

If you can’t make it to this year’s event in person, you are still entitled to vote in the DF Committee elections.!! Just fill out this form and you will receive your ballot on Saturday 16th August to cast your vote over the weekend from home.

Thursday 14th August: Once all submissions have been collected, and after any removals are made by the secretary, the candidates list will be published, beginning the 48-hour window required by Althing 2023 Motion 23-03. This gives the candidates time to assess their competition, negotiate co-running and/or drop out of the race to prioritise younger candidates. (Focus groups say we should call this system the “two day delay” but apparently Camp 100 News Corp have threatened to sue if we do.)

Saturday 16th August (Day 1 of Althing): As we begin business at the event, those who registered online will be able to cast their votes from home. Those of us who are there in person will spend the day talking through all the wonderful motion submissions

Sunday 17th August (Day 2 of Althing): Voting closes at midday for everyone, following which we will add up the in person votes with those cast online and bring you most of the results

Most of the results?”

You, probably right now

Yeah, there’s some extra election circumstances we have to consider for some of the roles.

If you’re MEST-UP trained and declared it on your form, you’ll take part in a second vote of all the candidates in the MEST UP Coordinator Election who placed above RON (Re-open nominations) in the first round.

Similarly, the newly elected committee will take part in a second round of voting to determine who their new Chair will be.

Don’t stress too much about these rounds!! (I stressed so hard about it last year I had a migraine) All your votes matter!

If you’re considering running for committee this year, or just interested in how our democratic process works, I hope I’ve managed to clear things up a little bit. If you’re after some light reading, I’d like to refer you to these wonderful documents:

I’m looking forward to seeing loads of you at The EveryThing next week!
If you haven’t booked yet, please do it now!!

Blues skies,

Tyler Eckersall,
Chair of DF Committee 24/25

  1. This is such a great guide and it is almost time for Althing!!! There are so many amazing DFs who bring so much character to events, but also crazy dedication to the team and I will be so sad to see so many move on from their roles and age out. However, there have also been so many new and enthusiastic DFs coming in recently, so I can’t wait to see what they bring to the movement.

    DFs never dies!
